‘Hurricane’ Carter dies

Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, a US boxer made famous by a racially tinged wrongful murder conviction that landed him behind bars for 19 years, died on Sunday. He was 76.
Carter, who died of prostate cancer in Toronto, was convicted twice for the 1966 murder of three people shot at a tavern in Paterson, New Jersey, United States (US) and Canadian media reported.
The conviction, which cut short his illustrious boxing career as a fearsome middleweight contender, made him a cause celebre.

Maya Angelou to be Mandela film festival ambassador

Dr Maya Angelou, playwright, producer, director, best-selling author, civil rights activist, educator and historian has accepted the role of Honorary Global Ambassador of the 2015 Mandela International Film Festival.
Angelou wrote and recited a poem in honour of Mandela at the time of death. She met Mandela in the 1960s when she lived in Cairo.
In her poem, His Day is Done, Angelou mourns Mandela’s death, praises him as a modern-day David who slew a mighty Goliath and a Gideon, who freed the South African people.

AfricAvenir commemorates Rwandan Genocide

AfricAvenir is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide on Saturday.
As part of the commemoration, AfricAvenir will host the Namibian premiere of the film ‘Imbabazi - The Pardon’ at the Goethe-Centre at 19:00.
The film was directed by Joel Karekezi and produced by Veronique Doumbe in 2013 and is 73 minutes long.
Earlier this year, the film was awarded the Nile Grand Award at the 3rd Luxor African Film Festival.
In February, the film also won Best Director and Best Film at the A Thousand Hills Academy Awards.

Jackson Wahengo live at the Warehouse

Mighty Dreads guitarist Jackson Wahengo will be performing live at the Warehouse Theatre at 20:00 this Friday
He will also perform songs from his new album titled ‘Akutu Hewa’.
Jackson lived through the final era of the Namibian liberation struggle and in his music he reminisces about the various adversities and atrocities of the struggle for independence.
His roots lie in the northern Namibian Shambo music, which he combines with contemporary Western styles and Jazz.
He currently resides in Geneva, Switzerland.

Lindsay Lohan confirms miscarriage

Lindsay Lohan has revealed she had a miscarriage while filming her reality TV show ‘Lindsay’ last year.
The troubled star made the devastating revelation in the last moments of the two-hour finale of ‘Lindsay’ on April 14, and admitted the loss was the reason she took a couple of weeks off from filming the programme on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network.
Lindsay, who hit the headlines for delaying the production of the show when she took the break, said: ‘’No one knows this, and we can finish after this, I had a miscarriage for the two weeks that I took off.’’
