Several South African soldiers deployed in the Central African Republic were killed in clashes with rebels, who captured the capital Bangui at the weekend.

President Jacob Zuma should have withdrawn South African troops when Central African Republic President Francois Bozize failed to honour a peace agreement, the South African National Defence Force Union (Sandu) said yesterday.
“The president… should have withdrawn our troops at the very moment Bozize dishonoured his obligations in this respect,” Sandu national secretary Pikkie Greeff said in a statement.

The death toll from religious violence in central Myanmar rose to 32 at the weekend, as rescuers found bodies in the ashes of homes torched during unrest, officials said.
Dozens of houses and a mosque have been torched as commu¬nal violence spread in central Myanmar, officials said Sunday, de¬fying authorities’ efforts to quell deadly clashes between Buddhists and Muslims.
