Though Namibia managed a slight increase in its total exports last year, increased imports resulted in the national trade deficit widening by N$6 billion, compared to 2011.
Trade in Namibia remains worryingly dependent on mineral exports, the latest trade statistics from the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) shows. The country recorded a trade deficit of N$17 billion over the year, further widening the deficit which stood at N$11 billion at the end of 2011.
Statistician-General Dr John Steytler attributed the results to a 24% increase in the country’s import bill, which was led by major items such as mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation, as well as vehicles imported during this period. A New York judge has blocked mayor Michael Bloomberg’s planned ban on giant sodas this week, dealing a setback to his public health agenda.
New York Judge Milton Tingling ruled that measures by the state of New York to restrict soda servings to a maximum of 470ml in restaurants and other venues, were “arbitrary and capricious” and he barred the plan “permanently”.
Bloomberg has made health issues a key plank of his administration, banning smoking in restau-rants, bars and other public places.
He quickly denounced the judge’s decision on sodas as “clearly wrong” and said the city would appeal. Read more about Judge blocks NY ban on giant fizzy drinks

Following a decline of 3,7% between July and August last year, Namibia’s economy rebounded to positive growth during the last three months of 2012, rising by 4,3%.
The Namibian economy avoided a repeat of 2012’s third quar¬ter dip between October and December last year, according to the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistics released by the Na¬mibia Statistics Agency (NSA) yes¬terday.
However, the 4,3% growth realised in 2012’s Q4 fell short of the 10,4% growth over the same period in 2011, pointing to a considerable slowdown in economic activity in the country. Read more about Economy bounces back steadily

Botswana is likely to export 115 million tonnes of thermal coal in the next seven to 10 years and will look to private firms to build rail links to ports in Namibia and Mozambique.
Landlocked Botswana, which has the second-biggest coal resource on the continent after South Af-rica, plans to export as much as 40 million tonnes of coal in three to four years, Charles Siwawa, chief executive of Botswana Chamber of Mines, said.
Currently Botswana has only one coal mine that caters to its domestic needs.
It aims to enter the export market by potentially shipping cargoes through the ports of Walvis Bay in Namibia to the west, or Techobanine in Mozambique to the east. Read more about Botswana aims to export masses of thermal coal
